Corey Collins’ three home runs powered Georgia baseball past Wofford 18-6 Tuesday evening at Foley Field. The win propelled the Bulldogs to 18-4 on the season, while the Terriers now sit at 13-5.
Collins set the tone for Georgia early, drilling the second pitch of the game to deep right field to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
After a couple of scoreless innings on the mound by senior Zach DeVito, Georgia’s offense got back to work, flipping the scorecard over to bring Collins back up to the plate. With the Bulldogs leading by two, he stepped into the batter’s box.
The only difference was this time, he didn’t wait until the second pitch.
Collins ambushed the first pitch he saw, sending it to Kudzu Hill to give Georgia a 5-0 lead. A couple of innings later, he laced another one over the right field wall, further bolstering the Bulldogs’ lead to 10.
Collins finished the game 4-5 with three home runs, four hits and eight runs batted in. He is only the 12th Georgia player to finish a game with three homers.
“Corey gets on base a lot,” head coach Wes Johnson said of his decision to bat Collins leadoff for just the second time this season. “When you’ve got the best player in college baseball in Charlie Condon, you want somebody on base that is in front of him.”
As a team, the Bulldogs jumped on Wofford’s pitching staff. Georgia hit a season-high seven home runs in the contest, capped off by graduate Clayton Chadwick’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth.
Georgia next hosts Alabama March 22-24 for its SEC home-opening series. The Crimson Tide are having an impressive start to their season, with an 18-3 record and 2-1 in conference play.
